What an email verifier actually checks
An email verifier answers a deceptively simple question: if you sent a message to this address right now, would it reach a real inbox? It answers that without ever sending an email, by running a sequence of independent checks and combining what they find into a single verdict.
The first check is syntax. The address has to be well-formed — a local part, an @ sign, and a domain with a valid structure. This catches obvious mistakes like a missing @, illegal characters, or a trailing dot, as well as common provider typos such as gmial.com or hotmial.com that a person would never notice while typing quickly.
Next comes the domain. The verifier looks up the domain's DNS records to confirm it exists and publishes MX (mail exchange) records — the entries that tell the world which servers accept mail for that domain. A domain with no MX records generally cannot receive email at all, so any address on it will hard-bounce no matter how the mailbox is spelled.
Finally, the verifier examines the mailbox itself. It connects to the receiving mail server the same way a sending server would and reads how the server responds to the specific address, without delivering a message. From that response it can often tell whether the mailbox exists, whether the domain accepts mail for every address (a catch-all), and whether the address shows signs of being a spam trap, a disposable domain, or a role account.
When to use this
Verify a single address whenever a bad one is expensive. Before you add an important contact to your CRM, when a signup looks suspicious, or when you're about to email a high-value prospect and a bounce would be embarrassing — a five-second check is cheap insurance.
The single-address checker is also the fastest way to confirm the tool is doing what you expect before you commit a whole list. Run a few addresses you already know the truth about — your own inbox, a colleague's, a made-up one — and watch how each is classified.

Reading the result
Valid means the address is well-formed, the domain can receive mail, and the mailbox responded like a real one — safe to send. Invalid means something failed hard: broken syntax, a domain with no mail servers, or a mailbox the server rejected. These are the addresses that bounce, and removing them is the single biggest lever on your bounce rate.
Catch-all (sometimes shown as "accept-all" or "unknown") means the domain accepts mail for every possible address, so the server won't confirm whether this specific mailbox exists. Some catch-all addresses are perfectly real; others aren't. Treat them as a middle risk tier — fine to send to engaged, opted-in contacts, riskier in a cold campaign.
Verification and your sender reputation
Bounces aren't just wasted sends — they're a signal. Mailbox providers like Gmail and Outlook track how much of your mail hits dead addresses, and a high bounce rate tells them your list is stale, purchased, or carelessly managed. The penalty isn't confined to the bad addresses: it attaches to your whole sending reputation, which quietly pushes more of your mail — including messages to good, engaged contacts — into spam folders.
That's why verification pays back out of proportion to the number of addresses it removes. Cutting the invalid ones protects the deliverability of everything else you send. For a newer sending domain still building trust with the providers, keeping bounces low from the very first campaign is one of the most valuable habits you can form — and verifying before you send is the simplest way to do it.

Does verifying send an email to the address?
No. Verification inspects DNS records and the mail server's response to the address; it never delivers a message, so the person on the other end is never contacted or notified.
How accurate is it?
A single-address check reliably catches syntax errors, dead domains and mailboxes the server openly rejects. It is less certain on catch-all domains, where no verifier can confirm a specific mailbox by design. Full-list verification adds deeper mailbox and catch-all analysis on top of these same checks.
What's the difference between valid, catch-all and invalid?
Valid = safe to send. Invalid = it will bounce, so remove it. Catch-all = the domain accepts everything and the mailbox can't be confirmed, so score it as medium risk and send only to engaged contacts.
Will verifying reduce my bounce rate?
Removing the invalid addresses a verifier finds directly lowers hard bounces, which is what mailbox providers watch most closely. Keeping bounces low protects your sender reputation and, in turn, how much of your mail reaches the inbox.
How often should I re-verify?
Email addresses decay as people change jobs and abandon inboxes, so a list that was clean six months ago won't be today. Re-verify before any major send, and re-check the whole list every three to six months if you mail it regularly.
